Wayne State Professors Nikhil Dhurandhar and Nutrition and Food Science Chair David Klurfeld will headline a symposium titled "The Science of Weight Management for Children and Adults." The symposium is open to the public and geared toward anyone interested in learning the latest scientific facts about weight management as well as the myths, quackery and scams.
The event is sponsored by the Rochester Center for Obesity Research (RCOR) on June 7, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Northfield 5500 Crooks Road in Troy. Dhurandhar, who holds the William W. Hardy Endowed Chair in Obesity Research in the department of nutrition and foods science, will discuss the topic: "What is Special About Obesity?" He is currently engaged in research involving the link between a virus and obesity. He also is involved with research at the Rochester Center.
Klurfeld will discuss the topic: "Stay Away From Quackery." Klurfeld's research focus is in a variety of areas relating diet to chronic diseases.
The other headline speakers are: Richard Atkinson, Emeritus professor of medicine and nutritional science at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. and John Foreyt, a professor and obesity specialist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
The Rochester Center is a Rochester-based, non-profit collaboration with Crittenton Hospital's Weight Management Center and Wayne State University.
