Wayne State commencement set for Tuesday, May 6, in Cobo

(See background below on four graduating students of special interest) What: Wayne State University spring commencement ceremonies When: Tuesday, May 6, 7:30 p.m. Where: Cobo Arena Additional Info: Among the approximately 2,700 students in the May graduating class are the following. Please see the accompanying backgrounder for additional details on each. * Denise and Andrea Romanowski, mother and daughter from Dryden, are graduating together with bachelor's degrees in social work. * Vanessa Nava of Detroit came to the United States from Mexico as a shy 11-year-old who spoke no English. She not only met the challenge of learning a new language and overcoming her shyness but also has taken a leadership position in numerous university groups and community volunteer activities. She will receive a bachelor's in information systems and management. * Stephanie Hope-Cochran of Miami is an outstanding example of a student willing to make personal sacrifices to achieve a dream - in this case earning a master's degree in library and information science. Not only did her pursuit of an advanced degree mean moving hundreds of miles away from her husband for more than a year but, without a car, she relied mainly on public transportation daily to get from a residence on Detroit's east side to classes at WSU, some of which were at the university's Oakland Center in Farmington Hills.
