Wayne State University's Law School has invited 225 Detroit high school students to learn about the historic Brown v. Board of Education civil rights case during a daylong student teach-in.
The event will be held on Wednesday, May 7, from 8:45 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit's Cultural Center. The Damon J. Keith Law Collection of African-American Legal History at Wayne State University Law School is sponsoring the event in conjunction with Metropolitan Future Lawyers Club and the Children's Justice Center of Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services.
Students will attend an opening assembly, be assigned to a group and alternate between four concurrent group sessions for discussions regarding the case. The sessions will be lead by one of the following presenters: Ray Johnson, psychologist and former principal of Paul Robeson Academy; Alice Jennings of Edward and Jennings Law Firm; Stancie Adams, a community coordinator of college tours and Charles Pugh, a news anchor and reporter for Fox 2, WJBK-TV.
Many of the students involved in the event are interested in pursuing law careers and are members of the Future Lawyers Club or involved in the Children's Justice Center.
The students will also receive a tour of the Keith Collection's "Marching Toward Justice" exhibit. The touring exhibit is currently on display at the Wright Museum.
A videotaped interview of Autherine Lucy telling of her experiences trying to attend the then-segregated University of Alabama in 1956 will be shown to the high school students. Lucy, the first African American admitted to Alabama, was expelled after three days because violent mobs prevented her from attending class.
For more information contact the Keith Collection at (313) 577-6530.
