The Broadway musical Sweet Charity will be presented by The Bonstelle Theatre Company April 18-20 and 25-27. Detroit audiences were some of the first to see this Bob Fosse extravaganza that previewed in Detroit at the Fisher Theatre before opening to rave reviews on Broadway in 1965.
Sweet Charity is a tender, poignant and consistently funny look at the misadventures, in the ways of love encountered by the gullible and guileless lady known as Charity Hope Valentine. Charity is a dance hall hostess who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man. The original Broadway production was nominated for 12 Tony awards and Bob Fosse took home the trophy for best choreography. Sweet Charity is known for the hit songs "Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" the book was written by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields.
The Bonstelle Theater production is being directed by Lavinia Hart and choreographed by Nira Pullin. During the rehearsal process the cast of Sweet Charity had the opportunity to work with Tony Stephens who worked as Bob Fosse's dance captain for the Broadway production.
The Sweet Charity cast features Darrell Glasgow, Chad Campbell, Christopher Dybash, Kelly Rossi (Sterling Heights), Kathleen Orr (Trenton), Sarah Garza (St. Clair Shores), Sarah Korson (Pleasant Ridge), Sarah Switanowski, Frank Sawa, Meagan Evanoff (Warren) Brian Thibault (Ferndale) Julie Smeltzer (St. Clair) Christopher Hazlett (Rochester Hills), Anthony Primeau (Southgate), Laura Hofmeister (Dearborn Heights), Melissa Harrison, Andrea Smith (Liviona), Danielle Cochrane (Garden City), Marianne Garica (Jenison), Jennifer Sessions, Mike Fiedler (Fraiser), Matios Simonian (Dearborn), Patrick Hanley (Redford), Joseph Porter (Cheboygen), Janee Smith (Detroit) and Mark Trotter (Birmingham).
