Barbara Moore, instructor in nursing at Wayne State University in Detroit and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, is recently back from a weekend preparing for deployment. In addition to teaching at WSU, Moore is a critical care nurse with the 323rd Combat Support Hospital in the U.S. Army. She has been advised deployment can come at any time: "It's really nerve-wracking, she said, but I'm a soldier and must be prepared at all times."
This was Moore's second experience waiting for word about wartime service. In the reserve since 1987, Moore said many from her unit were called for service during the Gulf War. She was making preparations to go herself at that time but remembers that on "drill Sunday" she was advised the war was called off.
Moore, who resides in Lathrup Village, can call on her training to address the impact deployment has on families and careers.
