Professional and collegiate sports officials, educators and athletes, past and present, will explore careers and volunteerism during Wayne State University's "Career In Sports and Youth Sports Conference," April 11-12, at the university's Oakland Center, 33737 W. Twelve Mile Rd. in Farmington Hills.
Sponsored by Wayne State's College of Education Sports Administration Program and the Volunteers, Administrators and Coaches (VAC) Training Program, the conference will feature a lineup of sports administration experts including: former University of Michigan quarterback John Wangler; former Wayne State University assistant athletic director Christ Petroleous; Brandon Bissell, Detroit Lions; Jill Bresky, Detroit Shock and Fury; David Greer, head basketball coach at Wayne State and other presenters representing various areas of expertise.
Topics during the two-day conference will include coaching philosophy/ethics, first aid, risk management, weight training and conditioning, coaches' legal duties, psychology aspects, effective communication, development and nutrition and parental involvement.
The three-fold purpose of the conference is to give students and physical education-related majors an opportunity to obtain information regarding careers in sports and youth sport activities, to offer young adults the opportunity to find out about local youth sports programs and various careers associated with them and to address the importance of volunteerism in youth sports.
Reservations are required and may be confirmed by calling (313) 577-5945; e-mail: vac@wayne.edu or fax (313) 577-5086. The registration fee is $25.00 per person.
