DETROIT, MI - The 2003 Wayne State Concerto Competition winners will be performing in the annual Concerto Concert on Monday, March 3, 2003 at7 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium. The Department of Music proudly presents this annual concert, which showcases talented WSU music students. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call (313) 577-1795.
This year's Concerto Competition winners are Jihun Kim, soprano, Julien Labro, bayan and Yan Jin, cello. All three winners will be performing solos with the University Orchestra under the direction Kypros Markou. Jihun Kim, a graduate student at WSU, is a native of Seoul, South Korea. She received her Bachelor of Music in vocal performance at the prestigious Ewha Womans University in Seoul and is currently pursuing a Master of Music in vocal performance at Wayne State. Jihun has been a featured soloist with various ensembles, including several musicals in Korea and leading roles in WSU Opera Workshop performances. Julien Labro, a sophomore at Wayne State, is a native of Marseille, France. He graduated from the Marseille Conservatory of Music in 1995 and is currently studying bayan and piano at WSU. Julien has won international awards, taking first prize in the Coupe Mondiale in 1996 and the Castelfidardo Competitions in 1997 in the category of light music. At age nine, Yan Jin was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China where she studied for ten years. She has been a featured soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, China Broadcast Symphony Orchestra, and has performed in many recitals throughout Europe. Yan is currently studying cello at WSU.
Wayne State University Department of Music is celebrating 84 years of artistic and academic excellence. The Department's faculty includes renowned jazz artists, composers, scholars, educators and members of the internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
