DETROIT - February 20, 2003 - Robert Jones, long-time host of WDET's Blues from the Lowlands, will broadcast his final program this Saturday, February 22, 2003. Jones is resigning as WDET program host to accept an appointment as Pastor of Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.
"Robert Jones has made enormous contributions to WDET over the years, "said Judy Adams, WDET Program Director. "His knowledge of blues music is unsurpassed, and has been honored to have this internationally recognized blues scholar and historian on our staff. I hope that we will have a future opportunity to have Robert at WDET again."
Blues from the Lowlands has been an extremely popular show on WDET since it began in 1984. Listeners came to appreciate Jones' unique presentation and vast knowledge of blues music and artists. Combining such elements as early recordings of spirituals with modern urban/electric blues, Jones always educated the audience on how the blues evolved and influenced virtually all genres of modern music.
Replacing Blues from the Lowlands on Saturdays from 10am to noon will be the new Willy Wilson Program, with Wilson delivering a rootsy blend of blues, rock, R&B, soul and jazz music. Wilson has been hosting a show on Friday night on WDET since 1997 and is considered by many an authority on vintage blues, R&B, soul and rock music. The Metro Times also recognized Wilson as "Best Rock Radio Host" in 2002. The Willy Wilson Program will begin airing Saturday mornings on March 1, 2003.
The new Friday overnight host, replacing Wilson, is Rob Boyle. Boyle worked in the WDET News Department and has extensive experience in the music industry. The Rob Boyle Program will feature music variety and will begin airing Friday, March 15 from midnight to 5am.
