Wayne State University's Studio Theatre presents Pearl Cleage's intimate drama Hospice

Opening on Feb. 20 and playing until March 1, the play deals with an estranged mother and her daughter. The two are unexpectedly brought together, when the mother who is ill returns home to find her daughter grown, and about to have a child of her own. After twenty years of silence Jenny has plenty of questions for which her mother Alice, an African-American poet and radical child of the sixties, is reluctant to answer. Bridging the distance between them does not come easily. Will Alice and Jenny accept the past and move forward or will they simply learn to make the best of their situations? Pearl Cleage's drama explores the many challenges that mothers and daughters face while taking twist and turns you would never expect.

Hospice was first produced Off-Broadway in 1983, as part of the women's series at Henry Street Settlement's New Federal Theatre. Hospice won five AUDELCO awards for outstanding achievement in 1983. AUDELCO is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1973 to generate more recognition, understanding, and awareness in the African - American community. Awards are given annually or excellence in Black Theatre. Other plays by Pearl Cleage include Puppetplay, Flyin' West and Blues for an Alabama Sky.

Hospice features Janee Anne Smith (Detroit, MI) and Deborah Joy Winans (Detroit, MI).
