The Bonstelle Theatre on the campus of Wayne State University will present The Imaginary Invalid, by Moliere, adaptation by Timothy Mooney. The medical profession comes under scrutiny when a hypochondriac, decides that his daughter must marry a physician so that he will always have a doctor around to attend to his mythical ailments. Argan is quite fond of bloodletting as a cure. WSU theatres want to encourage a little bloodletting for the purpose of giving life. WSU theatres would like to make the most of this whimsy of this play to bring a very serious problem to light.
The American Red Cross states that many parts of the country have less than a one-day supply of some of the most frequently needed blood types. Patrons can call 1-800-give-life to schedule an appointment to donate and receive the password, entitling them to a discount ticket. Patrons presenting their donation sticker given to them at time of donation will receive 2 free tickets to their choice of a performance of The Imaginary Invalid. The performance dates for The Imaginary Invalid are February 28-March 2 and March 7-9.
The Imaginary Invalid manages to poke fun both at the medical profession and at its gullible clientele. First performed in 1673, Moliere was already known for poking and prodding at doctors and others he considered privileged snobs. In this sparkling satire Argan's ailments are the product of his imagination and the drastic remedies he so willingly consents in order to avoid them, may ultimately be the cause of his own death. Argan's family members and a maidservant may be his only hope of surviving the array of medical quacks.
The chair of Wayne State University Theatre Department, Dr. Blair Anderson, will direct The Imaginary Invalid. The talented cast includes Gerald Belanger (Plymouth), Chad Campbell (Harper Woods), Joseph Colosi (Warren), Ny'Ree Fikes (Detroit), Henri Franklin (Detroit), OfŽr Fuchs (Oak Park), Sarah Garza (St. Clair Shores), Christopher Hazlett (Detroit), Adam Kurtz (Detroit), Molly McMahon (Ypsilanti), Eli Magid (Huntington Woods), Meghan Mott (Detroit), William Robb (Detroit), Julie Semlser (St. Clair), Brian Thibault (Ferndale), Renell White (Detroit), Christopher Williams (Inkster), and Megan Wright (Walled Lake).
The Imaginary Invalid plays at the Bonstelle Theatre located at 3424 Woodward Avenue, February 28- March 2 and March 7-9. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $8-$10. Special discounts are available for groups of 15 or more.
