Richard Slaughter, a resident of Rochester, Mich., has been appointed assistant dean for accreditation and assessment of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Professor Slaughter has been chairman of the college's department of pharmacy practice since 1989. He formerly was on faculty at the University of Buffalo (UB) where he established one of the first clinical pharmacokinetic programs in the country at the Buffalo General Hospital and directed the doctor of pharmacy program at UB.
At Wayne State, Slaughter has been responsible for the planning and design of the space for the department of pharmacy practice in the new Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences building. The $64 million building, a state-of-the art structure with the newest high technology features, opened in the spring at Mack and John R. The department of pharmacy practice's space increased over five-fold and includes the CVS Professional Practice Laboratory and over 6,000 square-feet of space dedicated to clinical research, with over 3,000 square-feet of this space devoted to anti-infective research.
Since coming to WSU, Slaughter has been instrumental in the development and implementation of major curricular revisions, including the implementation of the entry-level doctor of pharmacy program.
Both expansion of clinical facilities and faculty occurred during his 13 years as chair. The number of faculty lines increased from 13 to over 20in 2002 with an anticipated ten more positions added over the next 4-5 years with the roll out of the entry level doctor of pharmacy program.
Recently a visiting professor at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, he currently serves as an external examiner for the clinical pharmacology program in the school of medicine at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.
