Wayne State University's Educational Opportunity Center sponsors Law Day featuring Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and Judge Greg Mathis

Operation Get Down is sponsoring a law day program on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in conjunction with Wayne State's Educational Opportunity Center and Wayne State's Law School. The event entitled a "Day of Infunde," is designated to educate inner-city youth and adults about the law, legal procedures and legal officials.

About 600 people coming from three alternative highs schools, an adult education center and three homeless shelters have been invited to participate in the program that will be held at the Operation Get Down Nia House at 10100 Harper Avenue, at the corner of Gratiot and Harper Avenue in Detroit.

U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Jr., an alumnus of Wayne State's Law School, will be the luncheon speaker. Judge Greg Mathis, Detroit native and Wayne State alumnus who has a syndicated courtroom television show, will deliver a motivational speech. In conjunction, twenty-five area attorneys will come to spend the day with Detroit residents to educate them on their area of legal expertise.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 9 - 10 a.m. Breakfast with Richard Bernstein, newly elected member of Wayne State's Board of Governors
  • 10 a.m. - noon Mock Court with Judge Claudia Morcom (retired from Wayne County Circuit Court) and Pro-Se Paralegal Services
  • Noon-2 p.m. lunch with Congressman Conyers and community attorneys
  • 2:30 -3:30 p.m. African Court Systems with U-M Professor Stephen Uche
  • 3:30-4 p.m. Judge Mathis' motivational speech


Additional contributors to the program include: Claude D. Boiling of Pro-Se Paralegal Services, New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and Sam Riddle, a Detroit-based political consultant.
