Howard Normile, of Pontiac, was recently named associate dean of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The new $64 million College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences building, a state-of-the art structure with the newest high technology features, opened in the spring at Mack and John R. The college is named for its largest donor, the founder of Arbor Drugs.
Dr. Normile, who has been chairman of the physician assistant studies department, received his doctorate in 1983 from Wayne State's School of Medicine, majoring in physiology with a minor in pharmacology. He has received funding for his research from the National Institute of Aging, American Federation for Aging Research, Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association and other institutions.
He holds a number of honors, including the Michigan Academy of Physician Assistants research award and the New Investigators Award from the American Geriatrics Society.
His former department, physician assistant studies, sponsors a variety of community outreach programs, including the student tutoring programs at Edmunson and Winship School schools, it provides health appraisals for Special Olympians, and works with the "Shot for Tots" project.
His other community service includes membership on the board of trustees and chairman of the Citizen's Advisory Council of Detroit Central City Community Mental Health, which serves the Cass Corridor. He also was a member of the organizing committee for a National Conference on Alzheimer's Disease when it was held in Detroit.
The college offers 22 degree and certificate programs, and more than 700students now attend the college, which was founded as the Pharmacy College in 1924 and expanded to include other degree programs 50 years later.
