Wayne State University's Research and Technology Park board names new executive director

Howard Bell has been named executive director of Wayne State's Research and Technology Park. Bell, who is currently associate director of venture development for Wayne State, was approved as executive director by the technology park's board.

The Research and Technology Park is a non-profit partnership that is governed by a 22-member board of representatives from local industry, community and government entities. Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid chairs the park board.

The 47-acre development is designated as one of the state's Smart Zones. It is designed to attract and cultivate research and technology businesses. In September, the park was named the permanent site for the NextEnergy Center, which specializes in alternative energy research.

"Howard Bell is an excellent choice to serve as executive director overseeing one of the most important developments critical to significant technological research and development not only here at Wayne State, but also in the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan," Reid said. "His extensive business background and track record for identifying and procuring technology transfer opportunities for the university in his current position make him the ideal person to direct the Research and Technology Park." As executive director, Bell will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and oversee the development of the park. He is also charged with marketing the park to potential business tenants, financial sponsors and stakeholders.

Prior to joining Wayne State, Bell co-founded-with Detroit Pistons legend, Isiah Thomas-Isiah Investments, L.L.C., a venture capital firm that used its access to capital and business development expertise to form innovative partnerships in real estate, e-commerce, and sports and entertainment ventures.

Bell earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Brown University, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

Bell is affiliated with numerous boards and organizations, including the United States Patent and Trademark Office Bar; the Michigan Universities Commercialization Initiative; and the Michigan Microsystems Alliance Board of Directors.

Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students in metropolitan Detroit.
