On Saturday October 12, 2002 the Hilberry Theatre celebrated the Gala Opening of their season with the Fortieth Annual President's Preview. The Preview is an annual event designed to thank donors for their contributions and raise money in support of the Wayne State University theatres.
Over 200 people including dignitaries Irvin D. Reid, Wayne State University President and Dr. Pamela Trotman-Reid attended the event. After enjoying dinner at the Whitney attendees traveled to the Hilberry for an awards ceremony, emceed by former WDIV news anchor, Mort Crim. The ceremony highlighted the work and vision of Leonard Leone who began the Hilberry Company, and honored Sara Smith, member of the community support group, The Understudies, and lifelong supporter of the arts. Sara's health and advanced age prevented her attendance. Her son Robert and grandson Michael traveled from California to accept the award on her behalf. The attendees were then treated to a preview performance of selected scenes from The Good Doctor by Neil Simon and a festive dessert afterglow in the Dr. Henry and Yvonne Newnan Lobby of the Hilberry Theatre, provided by Twingo's catering.
Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid, Dr. Pamela Trotman Reid and The Understudies of Wayne State University Theatre hosted President's Preview. The Understudies are a group of over 100 community leaders committed to supporting The Hilberry Theater Company. Throughout the years they have become a national model for arts support organizations in fundraising and community awareness. In 1999 they received the Governor's Service award for their efforts.
