Brenda M. Scott was a noted public servant of the city of Detroit and active supporter of Wayne State University. Scott died on September 2 at Detroit Receiving Hospital following complications resulting from an elective surgery she had on August 30th at a Port Huron hospital. She was 47.

Scott, a lifelong Detroiter, was a political advocate for Detroit citizens in her nine years on city council. She was first elected to the council in 1993.

She also was an advocate for students at Wayne State University as a member of the Board of Governors from 1990 to 1995. Scott resigned due to a court ruling that precluded her from holding two elected offices as a councilwoman and board of governor.

Scott earned a bachelor's degree in political science and speech communication from Wayne State in 1977. She earned a master's in urban politics from the University of Detroit Mercy. Scott was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Scott's commitment to her alma mater will continue to live on thanks to the Brenda M. Scott Scholarship Fund that was created in 1997 to honor her distinguished service to Wayne State and the board of governors. The scholarship was endowed for $10,000, by former Wayne State President David Adamany on behalf of the board of governors.

The Brenda M. Scott Scholarship is open to all WSU students and is awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, financial need and demonstrable qualities of leadership.

Scott is survived by her father Rudolph, her brother Ricky, her niece Samantha and nephew Ricky II.
