Wayne State University celebrates opening of Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Building Wayne State alumni, students, faculty, staff and guests will celebrate the grand opening of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the Detroit Medical Center during a "Fortnight of Festivities" to be held Sunday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 18.
Built with a combination of state funds and private donations, the $64 million, six-story building moves students from an outdated facility in the downtown Detroit area into a building at Mack and John R, at the entrance to the Detroit Medical Center (DMC).
Among those on hand for the celebration will be donor Eugene Applebaum, the founder of Arbor Drugs, whose gifts to support the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences helped make the new building possible.
The college, one of 14 at Wayne State, enrolls more than 800 students in 22 degree and certificate programs. The new building was designed to provide students with the latest tools to prepare them for health careers in the new economy. It was described by a local newspaper's technology writer as "what may be Detroit's most high-tech building."

College Dean Beverly Schmoll describes unique features of the building that utilize the latest research and teaching technologies, "Every laboratory and classroom has numerous data ports for high-speed access to the Internet in all six floors of the building," Schmoll says, "and that's just the start. The rooms have the latest technology, including ceiling mounted projectors, computers, cameras, video recorders, comfortable Web-enabled chairs, and annotation software that uses Blackboard for faculty-student interaction via the Web.
"The CVS/pharmacy Professional Practice Laboratory anticipates the future practice of pharmacy with automatic dispensing and a focus on counseling and overall drug management of patients," Dean Schmoll said. "Technology will play a key role in accessing patient information, providing patient education, and keeping in communication with other health professionals who need to be apprised of a patient's drug therapy and management.
"Our mission is to advance health care by providing highly skilled healthcare professionals and, through research, to discover and implement new knowledge. Our new building, named for our primary donor, Eugene Applebaum, will help us and our students in countless ways," she said.
Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 14 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students in metropolitan Detroit.
