The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University presents a video and lecture titled, "Daughter of Vilna: The Jewish Music Scene in Poland between the Wars," on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at Southfield's Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Eminent Yiddish scholar Ruth R. Wisse, Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University, will present the lecture. Wisse's most recent book, The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey through Language and Culture, was winner of the National Jewish Book Award.
The accompanying documentary video provides insight into what was once a vibrant and vital culture. It also offers a personal look at the life of Wisse and her brother David Roskies, professor of Jewish literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Masha Roskies, the mother of Wisse and Roskies, was a dynamic woman whose unique repertoire of Yiddish folksongs dates from her youth in Vilna.
This program is funded by The Morris and Beverly Baker Foundation in memory of Morris D. Baker and is free and open to the public. Congregation Shaarey Zedek is located on 27375 Bell Road. For further information or to make reservations, please contact the Cohn-Haddow Center at (313) 577-2679 or e-mail aa2690@wayne.edu.
