Wayne State University Board of Governors elects a new chair and three officers

The Board of Governors at Wayne State University has elected Leon H. Atchison as the new Chair of the Board. Atchison, a lifelong Detroiter, was elected unanimously. He will preside as chair for the 2002 term. Atchison is currently the longest serving member of the Board of Governors. He was first elected to the Board of Governors in 1970. Atchison is also vice president of public affairs for Ultimed HMO of Michigan. He received both a bachelor's and master's degree from Michigan State University. Three other officers were elected to the Board of Governors. They include:

  • John F. Kelly elected as the Vice Chair of the board. He will serve as vice chair for the 2002 term. Kelly, of Grosse Pointe Woods, was first elected to the Board of Governors in 1998. Kelly is with the law firm Sommers, Schwartz, Silver & Schwartz P.C. and works as counsel and special assistant to the Attorney General for the State of Michigan. He is also an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Oakland University.
  • John L. Davis re-elected Treasurer of the board. He will serve as treasurer for the 2002 term. Davis, of Detroit, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 1993. He is senior vice president of finance and administration at Wayne State.
  • Julie H. Miller re-elected as Secretary to the board. She will serve as secretary for the 2002 term. Miller, of Oak Park, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 2001. In addition to serving as Secretary to the Board of Governors, she is Secretary of the University and Executive Assistant to the President. Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 14 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students in metropolitan Detroit.
