Professor Harold Arnoldi, Director of Bands for over 33 years, passed on November 20, 2001. He taught for many years at the elementary and secondary levels for the Detroit Public Schools and served as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor throughout the United States. Harold Arnoldi devoted his life to music and his contributions to the Department of Music during his 33 years of service have been infinite. As Director of Bands, Professor Arnoldi created the Weekend School of Music in ca. 1980, which afforded Detroit-area children the opportunity to enhance their musical talent with the Department's faculty and students. This wonderful program continues today in the Department of Music. Arnoldi also produced and directed "The Band Played On," a series of award winning radio broadcasts, which received the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedom Foundation. In 1985-1986, The School Musician Magazine recognized Harold Arnoldi as one of ten directors who have made outstanding contributions with a lasting influence upon music education in the United States of America. Under the direction of Professor Arnoldi, the WSU Symphonic Band performed world wide, including a concert tour of the People's Republic of China in 1982 and a concert tour of West Germany in 1985. "Professor Arnoldi served the University as a marvelous faculty member and alumnus, as well as a representative through his extensive activities within the community. Our department, students and alumni will miss our dear colleague's incredible dedication and personal support throughout the years." --Professor Dennis J. Tini, Chair, Department of Music
