Wayne State University professor receives award

Wayne State University Professor Jesse Vivian will be honored with the 2002 Executive Board Medal Award at the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) Annual Convention & Exposition to be held Feb. 22-24 at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Mich.

The Executive Board Medal Award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated an extraordinary personal commitment to MPA. The award was developed to recognize individuals who have been instrumental to the Executive Board and to the association in advancing pharmacy's agenda. Vivian has served MPA as general counsel for 14 years, representing MPA in corporate, finance, contract negotiations, patent and trademark matters, legislative and political matters. He has also served MPA as associate editor of the Pharmacy Law Update Service for the past six years, along with being a contributing editor of the Michigan Pharmacist for the past 12 years. He recently authored the book, Michigan Pharmacy Law: A Guide to Statutes and Resolutions.

In conjunction with serving MPA in various functions Vivian has been a professor at Wayne State University for the past five years. As part of this position, he is responsible for teaching graduate and undergraduate students in areas of law, ethics, professional responsibility and healthcare policy.

Vivian has been previously honored twice by MPA, receiving the Fellow of the Michigan Pharmacists Association (FMPA) in 1993 and receiving the MPA Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1992.

Vivian received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in 1975; he obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1983.

The MPA, serving 3,500 pharmacy professionals, strives to be a leader in professional and scientific advancement by following its mission of encouraging and supporting its members as the professionals responsible for the delivery of patient-oriented pharmaceutical care.
