Wayne State University names accomplished scholar and administrator as new associate provost

Wayne State University has announced the appointment of Margaret E. Winters as associate provost of academic personnel. Winters joins Wayne State University from Southern Illinois University Carbondale where she had been interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Prior to her most recent appointment at SIUC, Winters spent five years as the university's associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, preceded by six years as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

In addition to her administrative experience, Winters has a well-established teaching and research record in French and historical linguistics. She holds a doctorate in romance linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in French from the University of California at Riverside.

In her new role, Winters will report to Wayne State Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Charles R. Bantz, who is confident she will have a positive impact on the university's academic endeavors.

"Faculty and academic staff are the lifeblood of the university," Bantz said. "Margaret Winters will contribute greatly to enhancing their success."

"She brings to Wayne State senior leadership experience, a strong scholarly record, and long-term commitment to faculty success," Bantz added. "She has the breadth and depth of experience to successfully administer all matters pertaining to academic personnel. Her experience with faculty and academic staff hiring, recruitment and retention are complemented by her commitment to diversity and mentoring junior faculty. She has played a lead role in faculty contract negotiations and strongly supports open communication between faculty and administrators."
