Wayne State University meets needs with campus housing

DETROIT - Wayne State University's new residence hall is the latest example of recent and planned university efforts to meet the needs of students. The six-story residence hall will open in August. It follows the opening of the Undergraduate Library in 1997 and the Recreation and Fitness Center in 2000 and is just steps away from these facilities. In addition, Wayne State is opening a Welcome Center and mega bookstore in August. The Welcome Center combines student services in one convenient location.

"More students will choose Wayne State because we are offering on-campus housing," says Charles Brown, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life. "It will enhance the spirit of community, add vitality and contribute to the ambiance of our campus. It will be outstanding for our freshman and sophomore students."

Brown noted a recent survey that showed many Wayne State students said they would live on campus if they could. He noted that New York University recently increased its enrollment 25 percent by creating new housing.

Designed exclusively for freshman and sophomore students, the hall includes:
  • space for 360 undergraduate students
  • double occupancy rooms, furnished with private bath
  • rooms are cable ready and equipped with Internet connection
  • Meal plan with on-site dining facility
  • Live-in residence hall director and resident assistant staff to enrich residential life and facilitate learning experiences
  • staffed 24-hour reception desk with card access system to enhance security
