Substance abuse professional training schedule winter/spring 2002

DETROIT -- Wayne State University College of Lifelong Learning's Noncredit Unit is offering substance abuse classes for Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) credits. These courses are designed to build community skills for prevention and are open to teachers, social workers, community volunteers, counselors, employers and therapists. The outcome of this program is to increase effectiveness in prevention, intervention and treatment in relation to substance abuse.

Upcoming scheduled classes include:

Elderly, Loss and Substance Abuse (March 1, 8, 15 FEE) - This workshop will focus on numerous issues faced by our aging population and how these issues relate to their lives, changes they face, identity, health, routine, purpose, dependence on alcohol and other drugs.

Drug Abuse and Teen Pregnancy (April 8, 15, 22 FEE) - Course participants will analyze the consequences of teenage pregnancy complications upon the mother, identify health risks to the unborn baby, long and short-term effects, low birth weight and prenatal care and explore different programs and educational material available.

Coping With Violent Clients (May 1, 8, 15 FEE) - Intensive training in the safe management of disruptive, battered and out-of-control behavior. The purpose of the course is to supplement human service workers' therapeutic verbal skills with therapeutic physical intervention techniques.
