The Maggie Allesee Department of Dance is proud to announce the residency of the intense, inspiring dance ARTIST Jan Erkert. Ms. Erkert is one of the most influential leaders and builders in the contemporary dance world. Working from an expertise in body mechanics coupled with celebrated artistry, she has been referred to as an "engineer of the body." Her work provides the "missing link between art making and dance training." As artistic director of Jan Erkert and Dancers, she has received considerable national recognition for her work, described as "Ageless Artistry" by The Chicago Tribune, as Arresting and unforgettable" by High Performance. Currently on faculty at Columbia College in Chicago, she is a recent recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award.
During her residency at the Maggie Allesee Department of Dance, Jan Erkert is teaching master classes throughout the dance curriculum and recreating a work from her repertoire for the Wayne State University Dance Company. The dance will be performed March 22 and 23 at the Bonstelle Theater in the73rd Annual Spring Dance Concert, "If by Chance..."
The Maggie Allesee Dance Department shares Ms. Erkert's artistry with the dance community-at-large through a master class for the All City High School Dance Group, January 22, and a Dance Pedagogy Workshop for Metropolitan Detroit dance teachers, Thursday, January 24, 6:00-7:30pm in Room 3315 Old Main Building.
