Detroit Latino Education Conference to be held October 20 at WSU

The annual Detroit Latino Education Conference 2001 will be held at the Wayne State University (WSU) Campus - Student Center Building, 2nd Floor, Oct. 20.

Titled "Building Community in the Global City", the conference will consist of panels exploring various education issues including: "Education Without Borders: The New Immigration and its Impact on Latino Education" and "Education Without Borders: Experiences In and Out of the School Building." These panels will run simultaneously at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 20.

Refugio Rochin, director of the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, will deliver the keynote address at 12:15 p.m., Oct. 20, during the conference luncheon. His topic is titled "The Impact of the New (Im)migration on U.S. Society and Implications for Our Education Policy."

This event is the result of a collaboration of the following organizations: Detroit Public Schools' Hispanic Heritage Committee and Office of Bilingual Education; and Wayne State University's Office of the Provost, College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs, Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies and Office of Community Affairs.

Co-Chairs of the conference include: Irvin D. Reid, president, Wayne State University, Belda Garza, State Representative (MI) and Kenneth Burnley, CEO, Detroit Public Schools.

All Oct. 20 events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. Please register by calling the WSU-CULMA Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies at (313) 577-4378 by Oct. 16.
