Wayne State University Board of Governors to meet

The Wayne State University Board of Governors will hold its next regular meeting Wednesday, July 25, in the Alumni House/McGregor Memorial Conference Center complex on campus.

Two items of business the board will likely take up are the operating budget and tuition rates for the 2001-02 fiscal year.

The board meetings are divided into three different sessions. The board's standing committee meetings begin at noon, and are open to the public. The board takes a two-hour break for a private executive session at about 1:30 p.m., and then returns to a public session again at 3:30 p.m.

Agendas will be available on July 20.

WSU's Board of Governors is one of three university governing bodies in Michigan (including the University of Michigan and Michigan State University) that has constitutional independence. Its eight elected members are picked by voters throughout Michigan and are elected to eight-year terms.

The constitutional independence of the boards protects the members from political interference. Selection by the voters in statewide elections assures that the universities remain responsible to the public at large.
