Royal Oak resident and Wayne State University professor receives award

Wayne State University Professor John J. Bukowczyk recently received the Detroit 300 Polish Heritage Award for his contributions to "Detroit's history and well being."

Established by the Detroit 300 Polish-American Heritage Committee, a Detroit 300 Partner Program, the award was offered to 30 distinguished metropolitan Detroit Polish-Americans or Polish-American groups, each representing different fields of accomplishments and endeavor.

Among other award recipients were former Wayne State University Slavik Languages professor Helen Suchara; Rep. John Dingell; and Hon. Roman Gribbs, former mayor of Detroit. Honorees received a Polish eagle award and a copy of "Make Straight the Path: A 300-Year Pilgrimage, Archdiocese of Detroit."

Bukowczyk is currently director of Wayne State's Canadian studies program and is a professor of history in the university's College of Liberal Arts. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and his master's and doctorate from Harvard University.
