Jequan Williams, who will be joining the Wayne State University Debate team in the Fall, won third place at the National Barbara Jordan Youth Debate competitions in Oklahoma City last weekend. His winning efforts brought him a $1,500 scholarship from the Kaiser Family Foundation, who sponsors the national competition. Jequan won the local Barbara Jordan competition which was sponsored by Wayne State in April. At that time, he was a senior at Murray Wright High School in Detroit.
This is the fourth year that the Kaiser Foundation has sponsored the National Barbara Jordan debates. This debate competition is specifically directed to urban high schools.
Wayne State University was one of first universities in the nation to host a local Barbara Jordan competition. The National Forensics League administrates the program.
