Middle School students and breast cancer
Wayne State's charter school, the University Public School, will hold an unusual (for middle school students) "Breast Cancer Awareness Week" May 2124. The students range in age from 11 to 14. The teacher and sponsor is Ms. Renee Jenkins, who can be reached at the school, (313) 964-1600. Karmanos Cancer Institute is helping out. The principal is Fred Borowski. The school is located near Masonic Temple, at 2727 Second Avenue.
Staff awards presented May 17
A Recognition Breakfast for WSU staff who perform extraordinary service will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, in the Undergraduate Library Community Room. Awards will be presented for "Building Coordinator of the Year," "Customer Service Award" and "Years of Service" awards. For more information, contact Doris Davis at 577-3680.
Detroit Free Press columnist at May 18 program
Desiree Cooper, a regular columnist at the Freep, will join with three child advocates for the program, "Child Advocates: Who are they, Where are they, and Why should you care?" from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, at Alumni House. WSU junior a finalist for statewide award
Wayne State junior in physical therapy Katie McSween is one of five finalists for the Governor's Service Award. The award acknowledges Michigan citizens involved in volunteer service and honors those whose commitment to community and service to others is exemplary. Award winners will be announced during the eighth annual awards ceremony May 21. Among her countless volunteer activities, McSween recently cut off 10 inches of her hair and donated it to Project Compassion, an organization that makes wigs for children who lose their hair because of chemotherapy and other treatments.
