WSU School of Medicine to host discussions on future of health care: Heads of Michigan community health department, DMC, School of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center to speak

Two events next week at the Wayne State University School of Medicine could give a good indication what the future holds for the health of our community.

The Dean’s Distinguished Lecture, on Tuesday, March 27, will feature three crucial players in Michigan health care. WSU Dean John Crissman, MD, will moderate presentations by James Haveman, director of the Michigan Department of Community Health, and Arthur Porter, MD, president and CEO of the Detroit Medical Center.

All three presenters have seen their respective organizations undergo massive transformations during their stewardships and can provide invaluable insight into what the future holds in the areas of patient care, medical research and the training of our health-care professionals.

At the Robert Mack, MD, Lecture, on Thursday, March 29, the School of Medicine will shift its focus to the future of health care in the urban settings. Spencer Forman, MD is president of New York’s Montefiore Medical Center, the academic medical center for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, New York, and one of the nation’s leading experts on urban health care. Dr. Forman will present a lecture entitled “Montefiore: Developing an Urban Survival Strategy for the 21st Century.”

Both events will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in WSU’s Gordon Scott Hall of Basic Medical Sciences (540 E. Canfield). Those interested in attending are asked to call the Office of the Dean at (313) 577-1335. Media are asked to call (313) 577-1429 for more information.

With more than 1,000 medical students, WSU is among the nation’s largest medical schools. Together with the Detroit Medical Center, the school is a leader in patient care and medical research in a number of areas including cancer, genetics, pediatrics and the neurosciences.
