Zonjic performs in benefit concert for Wayne State's charter school

Alexander Zonjic, an artist who is said to "use his flute like a magic wand, "will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Wayne State University's Community Arts Auditorium.

"An Evening with Alexander Zonjic and Friends" is a fund-raising concert for the University Public School, a middle school affiliated with Wayne State University.

The flutist, who is also a program host for CBS-affiliate WVMV-FM in Detroit, plays a wide range of music, from Mozart concertos to soulful jazz and blues.

The artist has performed on stages around the world as a solo performer, with his own group and as part of jazz great Bob James' band. He's performed throughout North America, as well as Japan, England, the Philippines, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Some of his critically acclaimed appearances include Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the New York Apollo Theatre.

Zonjic began recording in 1978 with the disc, "Alexander Zonjic," and more recently performed as a guest soloist on the Bob James' album, "Ivory Coast, "featuring Zonjic's flute on the hit track, "Ashanti."

Ticket donations are $20. All proceeds will benefit student services and fine arts programs at the University Public School.
