WSU hosts Gina Gibney Dance in a Sneak Preview of NYC Premiere

The Maggie Allesee Department of Dance at Wayne State University (WSU) proudly presents Gina Gibney Dance (GGD) in a Sneak Preview Concert March 2, 2001.Celebrated choreographer Gina Gibney will premiere her new work Several Truths at the Duke on 42nd Street Theater in New York City, April 4-8. Several Truths was developed in collaboration with Canadian artists Caroline O'Brien, costume designer and Marc Parent, lighting designer during GGD creative residencies in Toronto at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts and in Montreal at L'Agora de la Danse. The dance tells the stories of women who share a desperate need to find identity, understanding and connection.

Vanessa Paige Swanson of Dance Insider wrote upon viewing the work in progress: Gibney's duets...are miniature gems of unpredictable movement and subtle emotion. Stark and simple, Gibney uses her considerable craft to create conflict. Indeed, New York Times reviewer Jennifer Dunning has hailed Ms. Gibney as the poet of modern dance today.

The GGD Sneak Preview concert in March will culminate a weeklong residency in Wayne State University's Maggie Allesee Department of Dance. During the residency, Gina Gibney will conduct intensive rehearsals to set excerpts from Several Truths on members of the Wayne State University Dance Company, to be performed March 23 and 24 in WSU's 72nd annual Spring Dance Concert. The residency will include master classes by GGD members who bring expertise in a variety of contemporary dance styles. Master classes will be offered throughout the WSU dance curriculum for students and invited community.

The Gina Gibney Sneak Preview Concert will begin at 8pm on March 2 in the Maggie Allesee Studio, Wayne State University. The Studio is located on the third floor of the Old Main Building, Room 3315, 4841 Cass Avenue at Warren.
