DETROIT -- September 28, 2000 -- WDET 101.9 FM, Detroit Public Radio, has put its award-winning arts, culture and information programming on the Internet. The station's entire program schedule can be heard via at WDET's website, expanding the station's reach to a worldwide audience.

"This technology gives local listeners an alternative way to enjoy WDET, and also allows displaced Detroiters to tune into the station anywhere in the world," said WDET general manager Caryn Mathes.

WDET had long planned to implement webcasting and the process was accelerated after receiving many phone calls and emails from Detroiters outside the area longing to hear the station. WDET is unique among public radio stations with its diverse mix of music and news programming.

"We've been receiving an increasing amount of inquiries from people wanting to know when they would be able to listen to the station on the web," Mathes said. "We're pleased to be able to enhance the WDET listening experience by offering another way for people to tune us in."

Webcasting is the first step in a series of improvements to the station's website. The website serves as a complete source of WDET information. Station news and events, play lists, host profiles, news archives, membership information and contact information for WDET hosts and staff all can be found at WDET's website. Beyond the webcasting, the station is planning a redesign of the entire website.

Currently, the WDET signal can be heard on-line using either the ChainCastTM or QuickTimeTM audio players. Both players can be downloaded for free from WDET's website WDET's website.
