New women's basketball coach selected

Gloria Bradley has been named head coach of the women's basketball team at Wayne State University.

She comes to WSU from Montclair State University, where she had coached since 1994. During that time her teams won three conference championships, finished second once and made one NCAA tournament appearance.

"I am glad to have such a talented individual as Gloria Bradley join the WSU athletic staff," said Charles L. Brown, vice president for student development and campus life. "She is a winner at her current institution and she brings experience not only as a collegiate player but also as a professional athlete. I expect great things from our women's basketball program due to Gloria's abilities and past accomplishments."

Bradley was a part-time coach at Montclair from 1993-94 and an assistant coach from 1992-93. Prior to Montclair, her experience included a head coaching stint at East Orange, N.J., where she also taught mathematics, and Seton Hall University, where she was an assistant. Bradley was a seventh-round draft pick of the Atlanta Comets in 1984 and played her college ball at Seton Hall, where she was team captain and a first-team all-Big East selection in 1984.

"My philosophy is to develop a program that can experience success on all levels," she said. "The first step is to develop the mental span and strength of the student athlete, followed by physical growth coupled with a nurturing environment where every athlete knows what is expected of her.

"I believe that goals are easier to achieve when you know them and have a plan of action." Bradley believes in hard work and defense and an offensive system with one major concept and a variety of options that allow for different styles of play and creativity. She also will stress the importance of academics.

"Achieving in the classroom should be as important as achieving on the court," Bradley said. "Once all of those things are in place, success is sure to follow."

"I am excited about the addition of Gloria Bradley to the Wayne State athletic program," said Rob Fournier, WSU athletic director. "Her extensive head coaching experience, successful management of all facets of a basketball program and winning approach will be quickly realized as we meet the goals and expectations of our women's basketball program."
