Retired UAW general counsel joins faculty at Wayne State University

Jordan Rossen, who directed the legal staff of the United Auto Workers as general counsel from 1983-98, will join the faculty of Wayne State University in mid-August as university professor of labor studies in the College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs (CULMA). He will teach in CULMA's Center for Labor Studies and in the Master of Arts in Industrial Relations program in addition to working with the college's Fraser Center for Workplace Issues.

Since retiring from the UAW legal department in 1998, Rossen has been with the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English and Klein of Mineola, N.Y. A cum laude graduate of the Harvard Law School, he also holds a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in economics (with an emphasis in labor relations) from the University of Michigan.

"We are extremely pleased that Jordan Rossen is joining the faculty and will be sharing his vast experience as a leader in the labor movement," said CULMA Dean Alma Young. "After a distinguished career as general counsel with the UAW, and then in private practice, Jordan will be an asset to students as well as faculty as they explore the intricacies of labor-management relations."

Rossen joined the UAW legal staff in 1964 and moved up through the ranks to be named general counsel in 1983. In 1978 he founded the UAW's Unemployment Insurance Clinic, which coordinates legal representation for UAW and non-union claimants alike using the services of law students.

He was in the vanguard of legal action to win unemployment insurance rights and back pay for women forced out of work due to pregnancy, and he was recognized in 1978 by the Detroit Human Rights Commission for his work on women's rights cases and related activity.

He has served on the National Labor Relations Board Advisory Panel, Michigan Employment Security Commission Advisory Council and citizens committees formed by U.S. senators to recommend U.S. attorneys and district judges for Michigan's Eastern District. Throughout his career, he also has written articles for various Law journals and been a guest lecturer at Wayne State and other law schools.
