It is with great sadness that Wayne State University Law School announces the death of Professor Emeritus Stephen H. Schulman on July 30, 2000.
After graduating from New York University in 1956 and being admitted to the bar in 1957, Schulman went into private practice for three years. From 196166, he worked for the New York State Attorney General's Office. In l966, Schulman completed his master's degree at New York University and was asked to join the faculty of Wayne State University Law School, which was expanding its full-time faculty from 12 to 18 upon completion of its new building. He served as an associate professor from 1966-69, and was granted tenure in 1969. He was made professor ementus in 1995, although he continued to teach regularly. Schulman taught a variety of courses during his years at the law school, including Corporations, Business Planning, Administrative Law, Securities Regulation, Trade Regulation and others.
With the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching, presented by the Law Alumni Association, the law school student body selected Schulmnan as Professor of the Year numerous times, in addition. He served as faculty adviser to The Wayne law Review for several decades, and was a regular contributor to the Review.
Schulman's accomplishments extended well beyond the law school. He worked tirelessly to reform Michigan corporation law by his work on the State Bar of Michigan's Business Law Section. He served as co-reporter for the section's Subcommittee on the Revision of the Michigan Business Corporation Act (MCBA). His book on the MCBA, Michigan Corporation Law & Practice, co-authored with Cyril Moscow and Margo Rogers Lesser, has been noted to be "an indispensable guide to practitioners in this state and elsewhere." In 1994, Schulman was recognized as the leading authority on the MCBA by the council of the Business Law Section. The formal resolution of appreciation recognized his contributions to scholarship, education and legislation.
Stephen Schulman was a beloved professor to many generations of students, and a devoted colleague and friend to fellow faculty members. His loss will be deeply felt by the whole legal community.
A memorial service is planned for the fall. Details will be available on the at Law School's Web site.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the law school for the benefit of the Arthur Neef Law Library. Send donations to Wayne State University Law School, Office of Development, 468 W, Ferry Mall, Detroit, M1 48202.
