Wayne State University reaffirms commitment to WDET 101.9 FM

University has no intent to sell or trade Station Vital to the Community

DETROIT July 24, 2000 -- Wayne State University president Irvin D. Reid publicly reaffirmed the university's continued commitment to WDET, its public radio station. Reid sees WDET as an integral part of the university's community outreach and an invaluable asset to the university.

"WDET has been serving our community for more than 50 years," Reid said. "The station provides Wayne State a strong arm for reaching out into metropolitan Detroit and delivering quality arts and information programming. We could not do this as successfully if WDET was broadcast on a different frequency or sold."

A radio industry observer had earlier speculated that Wayne State University could sell WDET's frequency at 101.9 FM to a commercial radio interest. Any such move has been strongly denied by Reid's office.

"We're very proud of our station, and look forward to WDET continuing to bring the best in music, news and the arts to southeast Michigan," Reid said.
