Caryn Mathes, Station Manager at WDET-FM 101.9, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Joan Silvi as WDET-FM 101.9 News Director and host of the "All Things Considered" news block weekday afternoons from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. effective May 8.
Silvi is an award winning 17-year veteran of broadcast journalism and has 15 years of on-air experience. She has proven experience in public and commercial radio specifically as News Director at WIQB-FM in Ann Arbor, Managing Editor of the Michigan Public Radio Network in Lansing and part-time News Director at WUOM.
"We are very pleased to have Joan Silvi join our staff as News Director and host of "All Things Considered," said WDET-FM Program Director Judy Adams. "Joan's on-air delivery is authoritative and pleasant. She possesses a concise vision for a public radio news product and is uniquely qualified for this position."
Silvi received the 1998 "Best Newscast" award in public radio from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the 1998 Clarion Award, the 1997 "Best Public Radio Feature" award from the Michigan Associated Press for her feature on the "Boblo Boat Restoration," and the 1992 "Best Public Radio News Documentary" award from the Michigan Associated Press for her documentary on "Domestic Violence: Myth vs. Reality."
She has also served as statewide symposium moderator for "Welfare Reform1996" sponsored by the Michigan League for Human Services, symposium media panelist for "Election '96: One year Out and Counting" sponsored by the Faverman Group Political Consultants in 1995 and as a judge for the Society for Professional Journalists 40th Annual Journalism Awards.
Silvi's other interests include her volunteer work at the Wayne County Family and Neighborhood Services Foster Care Home in Inkster, Prospect Place Homeless Shelter in Ypsilanti and Preservation Wayne in Detroit. She is well versed with the history of Detroit and has Detroit roots tracing back to the1850's. Ms. Silvi holds a B.A. in Journalism with a minor in Political Science and English and has completed graduate coursework for her M.A. in Sociology at Eastern Michigan University.
