March 20 opens Peace Week at WSU's University Public School

The fifth annual Peace Week runs Monday, March 20, through Friday, March 24, at the University Public School UPS, the middle school administered by Wayne State University.

Scheduled events include a Best Peacemaker student contest for each grade, a peace message contest and guest speakers from area peace organizations.

The Detroit Peace Makers group, led by David Booker from the department of community medicine at the WSU School of Medicine, will speak to students at their peace assemblies on Friday, March 24.

The group is part of a Youth Violence Reduction Training program that aims to influence students' ways of thinking in potentially violent or dangerous situations.

In addition, representatives from Pioneers for Peace, a program sponsored by the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, plan to visit with many of the students in their classrooms throughout the week.

These representatives are members of a group of former Rehabilitation Institute patients who have sustained injuries as a result of violence. They are now advocates of violence prevention.

The Conflict Resolution Committee at the middle school sponsors the Peace Week celebration. The committee organizes and implements a variety of activities and programs throughout the year to promote peace in the school.

This year's schedule had a Peace Rally at the beginning of the school year, and maintains weekly presentations of awards to students "caught" keeping the peace. The schedule also allows for monthly peace messages to be broadcast to students and their families.

Committee members include: Roxanne Barzone Clover, UPS counselor:

Anne Marszalek, pediatric nurse practitioner, WSU College of Nursing;

Karen Saunders, UPS social studies teacher; and Hertha Gast, professor, WSU College of Nursing.
