Photographic exhibit at Wayne State will highlight activities of American volunteers in Spanish Civil War

"The Aura of the Cause," an exhibit of photographs from the Spanish Civil War, will be on display in the Special Collections Room of Wayne State University's David Adamany Undergraduate Library, April 2-May 31.

The exhibit, from the Archives of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade at Brandeis University, consists of 175 photographs of brigade members and other international volunteers who fought for the government of Spain against fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. The photos, many from the collections of Americans who fought for the Spanish republic, show volunteer forces in training, in battle and at rest.

Among Lincoln Brigade volunteers were several students from Wayne State University. A Lincoln Brigade Scholarship Committee based at the university offers competitive $600 scholarships each year to WSU students who best exemplify the spirit and values of those who put their education on hold to join the volunteer group.

An opening program, including announcement of this year's scholarship winners, will be held in the library at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9. Library hours are 8a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon-11 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call Professor Mel Small in the WSU history department at (313) 577-6138.
