Wayne State University's Opera Workshop will present its spring offering of
Vincenzo Bellini's "I Capuletti ed i Montecchi" on April 7 & 8, 2000 at 7 p.m. T he performance will be held on the main campus in the heart of the Cultural District of Detroit. The performances will be in the Community Arts Auditorium in the Emma Lazaroff Schaver Music Building.
Bellini's opera is based on what is thought to be the "original" Romeo and Juliet story upon which William Shakespeare (and others) based his famous play. The opera is set in two acts and will be fully staged and costumed. It will be sung in the original language (Italian) and will be performed solely by students. This opera is seldom performed partly because of the brevity of the score, but also in part because its vocal challenges. The score is ripe with beautiful melodies and much passion. Come and experience one of Bellini's first triumphs and a sterling example of his genius.
Further information concerning the performances of this exciting opera can be obtained by calling (313) 577-1795 or 577-2619.
