Four WSU alumnae whose achievements rated headlines in the press last year will receive the Women of Wayne Headliner Award at a luncheon at the Detroit Golf Club on Saturday, April 8.
Given annually since 1967, Headliner Awards will be presented to Bellandra B. Foster of Franklin (Engineering 1989), owner of BBF Engineering Services, PC; Diane McMillan of Southfield, (Liberal Arts 1974, Social Work, 1976), voted the Social Worker of the Year by the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Social Workers; Shirley Schwartz of Warren, (Science 1962, 1970), senior staff research scientist at General Motors Corp.; and Barbara E. Talley of Southfield (Business 1977), community activist and first African American elected to office in Southfield, Mich.
This year Women of Wayne also will honor the accomplishments of the five female members of the Detroit City Council with the Highlighter Award. This award will be presented to Sheila Murphy Cockrel (Monteith 1980, Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs 1985); Kay Everett (Fine, Performing and Communication Arts 1963); Maryann Mahaffey, professor of community social work at WSU; Brenda Scott (Liberal Arts 1977); and Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, who attended classes at Wayne State.
In addition, the Service Award, given to a Women of Wayne (WOW) member who has demonstrated significant service to the organization and the university, will be presented to Diane M. Rockall of Stockbridge, Mich. (Liberal Arts 1970, 1975 and Library Science 1977). Rockall has been a member of the WOW Board of Directors for more than 10 years. She has served as president, vice president of the Western Region, newsletter editor and recording secretary of the board.
The reception begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. The awards program begins at 1 p.m. The luncheon costs $28 per person and reservations are needed by April 3. For details, or to make a reservation, call (313) 577-2169.
