Galleries at Wayne State University plan to open two art exhibitions in February.
The "Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition I" opens with a 5-8 p.m. reception on Friday, Feb. 4, in the Community Arts Gallery and continues through Friday, March 3.
The exhibition embodies the works of the department of art and art history graduate students. Student artists Deborah Friedman of West Bloomfield, Alisa Fritz and Deanna Watson of Hamtramck, and Carlo Vitale of Macomb Township offer an array of art from their academic careers.
The exhibition includes complex paintings, sculptures, digital photography and installation art. The students will give a public lecture on their art Wednesday, Feb. 9, in the gallery.
The second exhibition, "Modernism and Post-Modernism" features Russian art of the ending millennium. The exhibition opens Friday, Feb. 18, with a 5-7:30 p.m. reception in the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery and a 7:30 p.m. panel discussion in the adjacent Music Recital Hall.
The discussion will include four of the 13 exhibiting artists: Alexandre Gertsman, Michael Odnoralov and Professor Anatole Senkevitch of the University of Michigan. The exhibition continues through Friday, March 3 in the Old Main Building's Jacob Gallery, 480 W. Hancock.
Hours for both galleries are 10 a.m. à 6 p.m. Tuesday à Friday and 11 a.m. à 5 p.m. Saturday. All events are free and open to the public.
