African-American theatre maven honored by Wayne State University

Producer-director Woodie King Jr. of New York City was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Wayne State University during annual winter commencement ceremonies at Cobo Arena Dec. 16. With him here prior to the ceremonies is Diane Dunaskiss, chair of the WSU Board of Governors. King, who attended Wayne State, co-founded one of Detroit's earliest black community theatre projects, the Concept East Theatre. After moving to New York, he helped launch the careers of such talented African-American artists as Denzel Washington, Debbie Allen and Laurence Fishburne. The honorary degree recognizes King's commitment to fledgling artists, his dedication to improving the lives of inner city youth and his contribution to the growth and diversification of American theatre.
