Two art exhibitions open in December in Wayne State galleries.
The "Misbehaving! Works From the Studio of Sandy Skoglund," exhibition opens Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery in Old Main and continues through Monday, Feb. 14.
The opening reception is 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in the gallery with a lecture by Skoglund following immediately in the Music Recital Hall adjacent to the gallery Both are free and open to the public.
Featured in Life magazine as one of the world's top 100 photographers, Skoglund also is known internationally for her sculptures, installation pieces and work in alternative media.
Her art appears in 47 public and private collections. She has an impressive exhibition record that spans more than 250 national and international venues.
The exhibition displays an array of Skoglund's art including 11 photographs and eight sculptural elements and fragments from her various installations.
The exhibition also includes elements and photographs from her newly created installation, "Shimmering Madness." Visually stimulating, shimmering butterflies and a life-size jellybean figure are part of the mini retrospection exhibition of her career.
A second exhibition, "Graduate Works in Progress," opens Friday, Dec. 10, in the Community Arts Gallery and continues through Friday, Jan. 28.
The exhibition features the works of candidates for master's of arts and master's of fine arts degrees. It features a wide spectrum of styles, mediums and concepts from new and familiar artists.
Many of the artists plan to attend the opening reception from 4-7, Friday, Dec. 10. The free event is open to the public.
Hours for both galleries are 10-a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For more information call Sandra Dupret, gallery curator, at (313) 577-2423.
Note: Both the Community Arts Gallery and the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery remain open until 9 p.m. for Detroit's annual Gallery Crawl Friday, Dec. 3,and Noel Night Saturday, Dec. 4. The Community Arts Gallery has the "Museum of Absence" exhibition of the work of Jeffrey Abt, professor of art and art history.
