Wayne State University gives senior citizens additional incentive to enroll in classes

Senior citizens who wish to return to college or to enroll for the first time are getting additional encouragement from Wayne State University in the form of lower tuition.

Beginning with the winter term in January, persons who will be at least 60 years of age on or before the first day of classes (Jan. 10) are eligible for a special tuition rate of one-fourth the regular tuition rate (a 75 percent reduction from the regular rate). The university's Board of Governors approved the new rate at its November meeting.

Seniors already were eligible for a tuition break at WSU, but the latest board action discounts rates further. For example, under the new rate, a Michigan resident 60 or older taking a four-credit lower division course would pay $226.60 ($114.30 tuition, plus a $71 registration fee and a $41.20 omnibus fee) instead of $340.80 under the previous senior citizen tuition policy. Upper division and graduate-level courses would be proportionately higher.

The customary registration, omnibus and other applicable course fees will still apply, and the reduced tuition rates do not apply to the School of Medicine or the Law School.
