Wayne State University offers its 33rd annual Salute to Downtown Detroit Concert at noon Tuesday, Nov. 23, in Old St. Mary's Church, 646 Monroe at St. Antoine in Greektown.
The tradition, which opens the holiday season for the Detroit area, was begun by music Professor Emeritus Malcolm Johns in 1966. It continues under Professor and Chairman Dennis Tini.
The program has Tini conducting the Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra in Verdi's Te Deum and Kypros Markou conducting the Wayne State University Orchestra in Dvorak's Carneval Overture Opus 92.
The program goes on with concert founder Johns conducting Mozart's Laudate Dominum and the audience continuing the custom of singing the Hymn of Thanksgiving and St. George's Windsor.
Other scheduled selections include performances by Norah Duncan IV, and Doug Bianchi and Paul Ganson, directing the WSU Chamber Winds.
The concert is free and open to the public, however, donations are accepted and appreciated. Parking is available in the Monroe Street structure across the street from the church.
For more information call the WSU department of music at (313) 577-1795.
