The 46th annual On Stage dance performances for children presented by the Wayne State University Dance Company will be 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Community Arts Auditorium.
The concert is designed to introduce young people to dance movement in a lively and informal manner. Exploration is the theme for this year's choreography. The character Freda Frump, acted and danced by Portia Fields-Anderson of Pontiac, leads children to explore the elements of dance - space, time and energy - from their seats.
Frump introduces and explores the concert themes using audience interaction, then relates and explains each dance. She encourages the audiences to explore the limits of their imaginations as they search for new ideas and discover movement. Eva Powers of Bloomfield Hills, chairwoman of the WSU dance department, says the creative energy in this year's concert is superb. "The choreography is truly exciting -- the performance will take the imagination on a splendid journey," she says.
Ballet Renaissance, Freedom Dance Xpressions, Joy Middle School, Spain Middle School and Detroit High School for Performing Arts are among nine schools with students in the concert. Other schools are Cass Technical, Cody, Martin Luther King, Northwestern and Southfield Lathrup Senior high schools.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for children, students and seniors. For more information call the WSU dance department office at (313) 577-4273.
