Jennifer Granholm, attorney general of Michigan, is the keynote speaker for the conference on gun control scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the McGregor Memorial Conference Center at Wayne State University.
The WSU Center for Legal Studies sponsors the event, which opens at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by a welcome from John Friedl, director of the center, and Joan Mahoney, dean of the WSU law school.
The first session runs 9 - 10:30 a.m. with David Kopel, The Independence Institute, and Robert Sedler, WSU Law School, offering "Legal Perspectives on Gun Control." James Chalmers, WSU Political Science Department, and Marvin Zalman, WSU Department of Criminal Justice, comprise the discussion panel.
Following from 10:40 a.m. - noon Franklin Zimring, University of California-Berkeley, and John Lott, Yale University, present "Gun Control and Public Policy." The discussion panel consists of Frederic S. Pearson, director of the WSU Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, and Stephen Spurr, WSU Department of Economics.
The noon luncheon features Attorney General Granholm talking about "Perspective on Violence in Michigan."
For the final session from 1:40-3 p.m. Susan Ginsburg, U. S. Department of Treasury; Charles Wilson, Detroit assistant chief of police; and Brian Mackle, Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney; discuss "Law Enforcement Perspective."
Seating for the luncheon and keynote address is limited and advance reservations are required. The conference sessions are free and open to the public. A $10 luncheon fee is payable at the registration table on the day of the conference.
